History and use
This object belonged to Frederick Parkhurst Dodd (F.P Dodd) known as “The butterfly man of Kuranda”. The medallion was awarded to Dodd, for his butterfly collection, by the North Queensland Pastoral and Agricultural Association at the 1887 Townsville Show.

The medallion is evidence of Dodd’s keen interest and ability in butterfly collecting as a young man, prior to becoming a professional collector. As an object in of itself, the medallion tells us about the kinds of activities that were rewarded at this time in Queensland’s regional shows and complements QM’s collection of prize items from pastoral, agricultural and mining shows, including medals and prize certificates.

This is among QM’s oldest show prize examples, predated by one other medal awarded in 1885.
