History and use
This toy washboard or scrubbing board was made in the 1950s. Its miniature size suggests it was used for a doll’s house. Domestic play was a popular pastime for girls in the 1950s. This was also a boom decade for the availability of electric domestic devices in Australia, including washing machines. This toy is an early example of the use of plastic in toy manufacturing, but would quickly have become obsolete as toy designs changed to reflect changes in the home.
