History and use
This paper weight was presented to guests at the official opening of the Weipa Township in 1967.

Weipa, in Northern Queensland, was planned and built by the State Government and mining company Comalco in the early 1960s, after large bauxite deposits were found at the site in 1955. Bauxite is an aluminium ore from which aluminium is extracted.

While trial shipments of bauxite were underway as early as 1964, the township and ship loader were officially opened in 1967. Weipa is one of the world’s largest bauxite mines and is a highly significant industry in Queensland to this day.
