History and use
This gold volleyball was presented to Peter Beattie, as Premier of Queensland, to commemorate the success of the Australian beach volleyball team at the 2000 Olympic Games. Queenslander Natalie Cook and her partner Kerri Pottharst won the gold medal for beach volleyball in that year.

Natalie Cook (from Townsville) and Kerrie Pottharst (from Adelaide) won a bronze medal for Beach Volleyball at the 1996 Atlanta Games. At the 2000 Olympics they won the Gold Medal in the final, played on Bondi beach in Sydney, beating the Brazilian team who at the time were the number one-ranked pair in the world. Cook went on to become the first Australian woman to compete in 5 Olympic Games, representing Australia at Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000), Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and London (2012).
