History and use
This cylindrical glass jar is part of a dairy inspector’s kit owned and used in Queensland by Frederick James Watson who was a Queensland government dairy inspector for the Agriculture and Stock Department (later known as Department of Primary Industries) on the Atherton Tablelands in the 1920s and 1930s. Watson was responsible for introducing pasteurisation to dairy production on the Atherton Tablelands.
Queensland became known as the ‘dairy state’ during the economic depression of the 1930s, with dairying being the most widespread agricultural activity in the state. Between 1936 and 1941 dairying was Queensland’s second most profitable export industry.
