History and use
This mud encrusted TEAC turntable is associated with Queensland’s ‘Summer of Disasters’; the series of Queensland cyclones and floods which occurred over the summer of 2010-2011 and became one of the most devastating natural disasters in the history of the state. The event impacted over 2.5 million people and saw the evacuation of entire towns, power and water being cut off as well as roads, railway lines, buildings, homes and personal property damaged. It also resulted in the tragic death of 35 people and the declaration of 78% of the state as a disaster zone.

When the flood occurred in Brisbane, this turntable was housed in a shed in the backyard of a house in Chelmer. The shed was inundated by floodwater and when the water line receded days later, the contents of the shed, including the turntable were left covered in a thick blanket of mud. It is the current mud encrusted condition of the turntable which links this object to the event in a way that other flood related objects in the Queensland Museum collection do not. The floods had a devastating impact on people’s lives including their everyday household objects and personal property all throughout the state and the object allows for an evocative interpretation of natural disasters - which is a recurring theme in the history of the state - and the mass destruction and debris they can leave behind.
