History and use
This Cone Penetrometer and associated objects was purchased in 1958 by Queensland Railways for use in the chemistry laboratory at the Ipswich Railway Workshops. The instrument was used to determine the stiffness of grease which was required to ascertain the suitability of various grades of grease for particular applications on railway locomotives. The instrument was removed and relocated to a new chemistry laboratory at the Redbank Railway Workshops when the facility in Ipswich closed down. It has now been superseded by more modern technology.
