History and use
Vladimir Iwanow migrated with his Ukrainian wife to Australia in the late 1940s. Settling in Wacol, he spent most of his working life as the head storeman at Ford, Eagle Farm, until his retirement in the 1980s. Iwanow made this table after the World Exposition 1988 in Brisbane, commonly known as Expo 88. Vladimir admired his daughter-in-law’s decoupage technique and wished to create his own decoupage memorial to Expo 88. He set to work decorating a table with images cut out of Expo publications and magazines. For him, Expo was an enjoyable and clearly inspirational event and he went every week. Queensland Museum has a substantial collection of Expo 88 objects, including official merchandise and parade objects. This homemade object embodies the strong personal reactions of Brisbane residents to Expo 88, an event that is often said to have been a turning point for tourism and cultural industries in Brisbane and Queensland. Personal handmade objects like this one tell the stories of those who participated and came as visitors, rather than those who worked for, or organised, Expo.
