History and use
This 1916 Australian sixpence was minted in Australia during the height of World War One. The coin is literally worth six pennies (sixpence) and is made from more than 90% silver. Despite this, it was only worth the equivalent of a few cents in today’s money. However, during a time when it cost one penny to post a letter, having six pennies meant you could buy a loaf of bread or a pint of beer and receive change.
