History and use
This paver is one of the original street pavers of the Flinders Street Mall in constructed in 1979 in Townsville. Construction of the Mall began in September 1979, and these pavers were installed over 2 city blocks of the streetscape from Denham Street end in the east, to Stanley Street end in the west. By 2000, the retail success of the Mall began declining as larger shopping centres were built at the Willows to the west of the city and Castletown at Hyde Park. In 2010 the Townsville City Council commenced the redevelopment of the Mall returning it back to a main street thoroughfare and these original pavers were offered to the public as memorabilia in a competition ‘Paver Passport Competition: Your own piece of Flinders Street History’ on 13 August 2010.
