History and use
The XII Commonwealth Games were an important historic sporting event held in Brisbane from 30th September - 9th October, 1982. Over 61,000 people attended the Games - it was a public event on a scale that Brisbane had never before experienced. New facilities were constructed to host the event including the Queen Elizabeth II sports centre and the Chandler Sports Complex. Residential colleges were also built at Griffith University, Nathan, to accommodate the athletes. Forty-six Commonwealth nations participated and ten sports were featured including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, lawn bowls, shooting, swimming and diving, weightlifting and wrestling.
