History and use
This dress from the 1970s was created by one of Brisbane’s leading designers, Harvey Graham.
Graham’s career as a designer spanned the 1950’s to the 1980’s. In the 1950’s Graham had a workroom in Stanley St, South Brisbane and then in 1963, he opened a boutique in the Brisbane Arcade. Graham was recognised for his ability to adapt haute couture for his clients and famed for adopting the Dior H line in his designs by featuring a sash or belt. Harvey Graham was a celebrated member of Brisbane society known for attending all the most fashionable events and being seen about town in his BMW Coupe.
In 1954 Graham collaborated with Brisbane milliner Patrick Ogilvie. Their ensembles were modelled at the opening of an exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery. They were lauded for their European-influenced style. Harvey Graham also created ready to wear clothes especially later in his career.
Harvey Graham passed away in 1993.
