History and use
This medallion was presented to D. L. Lobwein to commemorate his years of service in the Queensland Railway Ambulance Corps from 1985 to 1994. This medallion was awarded in combination with Long Service Certificates, both of which acknowledged the untiring efforts of an employee over the course of eleven years in the practise and principles of ‘First Aid’.
This tradition began in 1920 when a recommendation was forwarded to the Commissioner for railways proposing that the committee of Queensland Railways Ambulance Corps should issue a framed Long Service and Life Membership certificate to those who, in their opinion, merited such an honour after at least eleven years of service.
This item demonstrates the practice of acknowledging service in the Queensland Raiwayl Ambulance Corp, and the emphasis placed on the Corp as part of Queensland Railway’s operation, which began in 1892.
