History and use
Bilums are a type of bag popular throughout Papua New Guinea, where they are used to carry everything from personal effects to market produce and even babies.

Bilums are made using a technique of looping and twisting string to create a durable, flexible netted bag. Traditionally bilums were made from natural plant fibres or animal fur, but today they are more commonly constructed from brightly coloured commercial twine.

This example was made for sale to tourists and features the design of the Papua New Guinea National flag alongside the text- ‘GOD BLESS PNG. OUR COUNTRY.’
