History and use
The model is a Deutsche Bundesbahn 05 Class steam locomotive. The 05 Class had a 4-6-2 wheel configuration and were built by Borsig with only three being built in 1935 and 1937.
The locomotives originally featured streamlined plates. This model's phototype locomotive is No.05 003 and has been modelled on the original locomotive post-1944 when the streamlined plates were removed.
The model is a Deutsche Bundesbahn version (the originals were Deutsche Reichsbahn), who after restoration, began to run the 05 Class again in the early 1950s. The 05 Class were retired in the late 1950s.
The 05 Class had a design speed of 175kph but in May 1936, 05 002 set a speed record of 200.4 kph. The record would stand for two years before being broken by a British LNER Mallard.
Bockholt produced three versions of their 05 model in 1984. One version was based on 05 001 which had streamlining and a Deutsche Reichsbahn livery in maroon, 05 002 which was in a black Deutsche Bundesbahn livery without streamlining and with Witte smoke deflectors and 05 003 without streamlining in Deutsche Reichsbahn livery of photographic grey and Wagner style smoke deflectors.
The model is housed in a wooden box.
The T-House model rail collection is a collection of national and international significance due to the size, quality and scope of the collection.
The collection, assembled over 30 years from the 1970s to the 1990s, holds 10 000+ models of locomotives, carriages and wagons. The collection is in excellent – often mint – condition. The models were collected by Mr Marsden Williams, who was born, raised and spent his life in the Wollongong area. Mr Williams was a business man who was renowned for philanthropy, he was an intensely private man, who nevertheless was well connected across the Australian business world. His 40 year fascination for model railways reflected his own interest in precision engineering, and his financial success allowed him to pursue his interest to a remarkable extent.
