History and use
This blazer was worn by a member of the Queensland Railway Institute (QRI) rugby league team. Members of QRI participated in local sporting competitions and representative sides were chosen to compete against other interstate railway institutions. Sports included football, rifle shooting, tennis, table tennis and cricket. New South Wales and Queensland Railway Institutes played against each other in Rugby League tests, while the majority of other states played Australian Rules Football tests. Cricket was the biggest of the sports, with all states participating in cricket competitions.
The man who owned this jacket was Gilbert Henry Johnstone, a locomotive driver, and later an inspector based at the Mayne Locomotive Depot in Brisbane. Johnstone has involved in the Mayne Locomotive Cricket Club which competed in a midweek competition with other workforce teams and was involved with cricket and rugby league with the Queensland Railway Institute. He was also elected to the Queensland Railway Institute Council for three terms; 1957-1959, 1966-1969 and 1969-1972.
