History and use
This black and white photograph shows several Ipswich Railway Workshops fitters preparing the aircraft engine and propellor for testing in late January 1920. The engine and propellor had been removed from Ross and Keith Smith's Vickers Vimy World War I bomber which they had flown out from England. After it failed at Charleville, it was brought to the Ipswich Railway Workshops for repair to the engine and for the fabrication of a new propellor by staff at the Workshops. One fitter can be seen leaning on the wooden propellor as he reaches down for a tool from another fitter on the ground. Members of the public can be seen gathering to witness this historic occasion. The railway drawing office can be seen on the hill behind the engine and the workshops dining room is visible on the right.
