History and use
Black and white photograph depicting the aircraft engine from Ross and Keith Smith's World War I Vickers Vimy bomber being tested. They had just flown the aircraft out from England and suffered an engine failure at Charleville. The faulty engine and a damaged propellor were railed to the Ipswich Railway Workshops where the railway fitters undertook repairs to the engine and the railway pattern makers fabricated a new wooden propellor. The engine was mounted on a wooden frame in front of the Powerhouse while a crowd of local Ipswich residents gathered behind a barrier to see this historic event. The propellor can be seen spinning while a fitter leans over the engine making some adjustments. The workshops dining room can be seen on the right while the railway drawing office overlooks the scene from the hill. The engine was tested on Saturday 31 January 1920 and demonstrations to the public were held between 2pm and 5 pm. The engine and propellor were despatched to Charleville on the following Tuesday.
