History and use
This postcard was collected by Charles Joseph Pound (b.1866 – d.1946), one of Australia’s earliest scientists to investigate veterinary and medical diseases in Queensland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

In June 1912, C.J. Pound travelled to the Unites States of America on a 5 month long study trip and collected numerous postcards along his travels. This postcard is part of a collection of around 30 that were collected by Pound during this time.

Most of the postcards from the Pound collection do not feature messages on the address side however a few are referenced in his personal letters and may have been enclosed with letters in envelopes and sent home rather than mailed individually. Some may have otherwise been carried home by Pound himself.

The postcards originate from Oklahoma; Memphis, Tennessee; New York, New York; Texas, Colorado, Atlanta, Georgia; St. Augustine, Florida; Mississippi, New Orleans, Louisiana. They depict a range of images from African-American people to city and street scenes featuring well-known buildings, hotels and restaurants. Other postcards feature locomotive and railway scenes, alligators and cattle.
