History and use
The lathe was used by Lionel Young of 483 Vulture Street East Brisbane. The lathe was purchased by his father around the time of Lionel's birth. (1912) He remembered his grandfather also using the lathe. Lionel learned turning on the lathe, and went on to have a career as a fitter and turner and marine engineer. He did jobs for family and neighbours on the lathe during the Depression of the 1930s and during the Second World War. He continued using the lathe for metal and woodturning during his retirement, and up to his death in 2006 at the age of 93. Lionel Young made metal objects such as motor mower pistons and car parts, and wooden bowls, mugs and lamp bases.
