History and use
A gold rail pass issued by Queensland Railways to the Honourable Mr Justice K W Ryan, of the Supreme Court of Queensland 1984 - 1994.

Gold Passes were issued by Queensland Railways to parliamentarians, members of the judiciary and other selected VIPs granting free rail travel whenever travel by rail was required. These medallion style gold passes were issued up until about 1990 when a change was made to a gold coloured "credit card" style plastic card.

The Honourable Kevin William Ryan CBE RFD was born in Melbourne in 1925. After finishing school in Warrnambool he attended the University of Queensland and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948 (he completed his Bachelor of Laws in 1956). He practiced at the bar for a few years before joining the Law School at the University of Queensland (1953 - 1965). From 1965 to 1969 he was trade commissioner and commerical counsellor for the federal government in Rome and Geneva.

He returned to the University of Queensland, becoming the Garrick Professor of Law and also returning to practicing. He took silk in 1978 and in 1982 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

In 1984 Ryan was appointed to the Supreme Court and retired from the Court in 1994. Ryan published a number of publications on income tax in Australia, law and Business in Australia, the Constitution and International Law. Ryan died in 2009.
