Description
Washer and gasket circle cutter. Used to cut leather wheel washers which were placed on an axle ends against the collars, prior to putting the wooden wheels on the axles. The washers reduced friction as the wheels turned.
Similar cutters could be used to make washers or gaskets for a range of uses in which flanged pipes are joined in plumbing and engineering.

History and use
Washer and gasket circle cutter. Used to cut leather wheel washers which were placed on an axle ends against the collars, prior to putting the wooden wheels on the axles. The washers reduced friction as the wheels turned. The washer cutters could be used by wheelwrights, or any person maintaing a buggy or cart by removing the wheels and greasing the axle ends. Worn or compressed washers would be replaced as part of normal maintenance. The central pivot has a square shank to fit a brace drill. The blades to cut the inside and outside diameters of the washer are adjustable.
