Description
Wheelwrights adze. Wheelwrights adzes had blades that curved down more than carpenter's adzes. They were used to chip or shave the inside surface of wheel felloes (the curved outside timber components of wheels). This wheelwrights adze was made by Brades Company of Broadwell near Birmingham. This adze was in the Sobbe Family, and probably used by Johann Jochim Sobbe and his son Henry. JJ Sobbe was a cooper by trade who settled on the family farm near Clifton QLD circa 1890. He and Henry built a farm wagon circa 1900, and possibly other horse-drawn vehicles.

This wheelwrights adze was made by Brades Company of Broadwell near Birmingham. This adze was in the Sobbe Family, and probably used by Johann Jochim Sobbe and his son Henry. JJ Sobbe was a cooper by trade who settled on the family farm near Clifton QLD circa 1890. He and Henry built a farm wagon circa 1900, and possibly other horse-drawn vehicles. The handle displays rasp marks and appears to be hardwood (spotted gum). The nail under the blade prevented it from sliding down the handle and injuring the user. Such a nail was commonly used on adzes.
