100 \ YEARS OF \ ANZAC \ THE SPIRIT LIVES \ 2014 - 2018 \ Australian Government \ Royal Australian Mint \ W \ WW1 \ MATESHIP \ In Australia, a "mate" is more than \ just a friend. Mateship describes the \ intense bond that develops between \ those who face challenges together. \ It is based on shared experiences, \ respect, humour and a sense of \ belonging. The bond of mateship \ transcends military rank: it doesn't \ matter if you are a normal soldier \ or an officer with pips on your \ shoulder, as mates, you are all there \ for each other come what may.
WW1 - MATESHIP \ 20
WW1 \ MATESHIP \ The spirit of mateship was on display time and again during World War One. Perhaps the best example is \ Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick, a stretcher-bearer who selflessly rescued wounded soldiers on Gallipoli. \ As bullets were flying and shells exploded, he kept going back into the heart of battle to bundle the wounded \ on to his donkey to take them to get medical attention. Victoria Cross winner Lieutenant Colonel Leslie \ Maygar was another who exemplified the spirit of mateship. His leadership inspired respect and trust \ among his men because they knew he faced adversity alongside them. When the 8th Light Horse was \ eventually evacuated from Gallipoli, Lt Col Maygar personally oversaw the withdrawal of the last men from \ his regiment. He was there for them to the end. \ LEGACY \ 9 330303 001574
