Description
Cigarette card. The card has a picture of a green coach with yellow wheels and a driver in the box seat. There is text on the reverse side. ('RHODES & RUTHERFORD'S MT. COOK COACH'') The card was one of a series of 50 on coaching issued by tobacco company WD & HO Wills of Bristol England for its New Zealand subsiduary. This series of cards all dealt with coaches and coaching history including the operations of Cobb & Co. Cigarette cards were intended to be collected, thereby promoting the consumption of the producer's brand of cigarettes.

Cook Coach, 1889/ This coach, built to carry eleven passengers, ran between Fairlie Creek and the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and was driven variously by the Messrs. Rhodes(2) and Rutherford (2). It was used to convey their Excellencies Lord and Lady Onslow on a holiday tour through the Cold Lakes districts, and Mr. J.S. Rutherford was the whip on that occasion, handling his team of six blacks with ease./W.D. & H.O. WILLS/ Bristol & London>
