Description
Cigarette card. The card has a picture of a green coach with black curtains and yellow wheels, two horses and a driver in the box seat. There is text on the reverse side. ('HOKITIKA-GREYMOUTH COACH'') The card was one of a series of 50 on coaching issued by tobacco company WD & HO Wills of Bristol England for its New Zealand subsiduary. This series of cards all dealt with coaches and coaching history including the operations of Cobb & Co. Cigarette cards were intended to be collected, thereby promoting the consumption of the producer's brand of cigarettes.

Reverse side text. <COACHES AND COACHING DAYS/ A SERIES OF 50/ 31/ Hokitika-Greymouth Coach, 1870/ This coach wa placed on the road by Cassidy and Ashton, mail contractors, in 1870, and ran between Hokitika and Greymouth. It had a short footboard to the box seat and an open back with tailboard, instead of a closed-in boot. It was licensed to carry eleven passengers and was drawn by four horses./W.D. & H.O. This card is from a series of 50 dealing with coaches and coaching history, including Cobb & Co, intended for the New Zealand market. Cobb & Co operated coaches in New Zealand as well as Australia.
