History and use
This souvenir toy kangaroo with a joey, nicknamed 'Matilda', was one of a dozen purchased during the 1982 XII Commonwealth Games by Hungarian immigrants, Mr and Mrs Szalai, in 1982.
Unassuming and uniquely Australian a giant mechanical kangaroo named ‘Matilda’ captivated the world at the Games Opening Ceremony with her endearing winks and beguiling flutter directed towards Prince Phillip . The official mascot proved to be one of the most successful elements of the marketing programme for the Games.
