At the 1982 Commonwealth Games, the athletics events took place at the QE II Stadium in Brisbane, Australia from 3–9 October 1982. A total of 39 events were contested, 23 for men and 16 for women athletes. Australian athletics competitors were successful in winning 9 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals. Dubbed the ‘Friendly Games’, the 1982 XII Commonwealth Games were an outstanding cultural and sporting success gaining respect for Brisbane on both a national and international stage. Forty-six nations and territories gathered to contest the Games with Australia leading the final gold medal tally. Five thousand volunteers from across the country assembled in Brisbane to help with the running of the games and to ensure that the city secured its place in world sporting history.
