History and use
The Aquatics events at the 1982 Commonwealth Games were held at the new Chandler Aquatic Centre that was part of the Sleeman Sports Complex which had been purpose built for the games. Australian swimmers were successful in winning 13 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals. Dubbed the ‘Friendly Games’, the 1982 XII Commonwealth Games were an outstanding cultural and sporting success gaining respect for Brisbane on both a national and international stage. Forty-six nations and territories gathered to contest the Games with Australia leading the final gold medal tally. Five thousand volunteers from across the country assembled in Brisbane to help with the running of the games and to ensure that the city secured its place in world sporting history.
