History and use
Designed by Brisbane teacher, Merrilyn Krohn, and inspired by the 1982 Commonwealth Games mascot, 'Matilda', the ‘blue koala’ model was one of over four thousand entries in a nation-wide competition to design a mascot for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The fundamental criteria for the design called for a ‘colourful ... blue, yellow, green, red, orange or pink or a combination of colours from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games’ ‘made-up/imaginary character or animal or person that represents the Gold Coast and the Commonwealth Games’. Key features of the winning ‘blue koala’ model include blue fur, blue and green ears, red nose, sunscreen, fluorescent yellow ‘boardshorts’ and Indigenous artwork on each paw.

Incorporating Yugambeh and broader Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art styles, the artwork was designed by Chern’ee Sutton, a contemporary Kalkadoon artist from Mt Isa, Queensland, in consultation with the Yugambeh Elders Reconciliation Action Plan Reference Group, Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and the Office of the Commonwealth Games. The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games has been hailed as an historic event in terms of the recognition and inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures at every level of the Games' organization and production, including consultation, collateral, product and uniform design, procurement of goods and services, participation and volunteering.
