History and use
This D4 was maunfactured in 1943, during World War II. It is a variant on a standard model, designated 'Wide Special Purpose' (WSP). The D4 was an early diesel engine crawler tractor, manufactured from 1936 to 1959, that formed part of the diesel range offered by the Caterpillar Tractor company.

Many of the earlier gasoline powered models were redesigned to incorporate diesel engines. The Caterpillar D4 model was effectively the diesel version of the gasoline Thirty model, one of the first tractors that Caterpillar produced. The D4 line was an extremely popular tractor for Caterpillar. This tractor was manufactured by the Caterpillar Tractor Company at the Peoria plant.

Bert Thiess purchased this tractor for his collection but there is no information regarding its history or provenance. Thiess Bros used similar D4 tractors extensively in their business during the late 1930s and 1940s, on projects around Briisbane and the Darling Downs
