Description
A 1927 Caterpillar crawler tractor model sixty with petrol engine. It is painted grey with red trim and red logo. The control levers and cap lids are also painted red. "CATERPILLAR" is cast horizontally across the front of the engine. "SIXTY" is cast vertically in red on both sides of the engine towards the front of crawler tractor. It has an overhanging radiator, individually mounted cylinders and lever control system.

History and use
This model Sixty crawler tractor was manufactured in 1928. The crawler is painted grey with red trim and has a 'wavy' caterpillar logo, the original logo adopted by the Caterpillar Tractor company. The crawler tractor was restored from a derelict state and was repainted in the official pre-1932 colours of grey with red trim by Bert Thiess. It was imported from the USA in 1983 by Bert Thiess for his collection.The Caterpillar logo decals were purchased from Caterpillar in the USA. There is no record of a Sixty being used by the Thiess brothers in their business.
The Caterpillar Sixty was one of the first crawler tractors produced by the newly formed Caterpillar Tractor Company after the C. L. Best Tractor Company and the Holt Manufacturing Company merged. It was essentially a rebadged version of the Best 60 model, manufactured by the Best company from 1919-1925. It was the most successful of the Best offerings, so was included in the Caterpillar Tractor company's first product line. It was also the largest tractor in the new Caterpillar line. The Sixty is considered an all time classic design. The Caterpillar Sixty model was manufactured in both San Leandro and Peoria plants from 1925-1931.
