Description
A 1938 Caterpillar crawler tractor model D2 with a four cylinder diesel engine. It is painted yellow with black trim, black logo and black lever handles. The petrol tank is mounted on the back of the seat at the rear of the tractor. It has an unpainted tread and red seat. It has an overhead valve. It has "CATERPILLAR D2" cast vertically on both sides of the engine at the front of the crawler tractor.

History and use
This model D2 is a 3J series manufactured in 1938, the first year of production. It was purchased by Bert Thiess for his collection but it is not known where or when he obtained it. There are 5 D2 model tractors in the collection but this is the earliest one.
The D2 model is a diesel crawler tractor first produced in 1938. It was Caterpillar's smallest diesel tractor. It was designed as a small economical tractor intended for farm work, and could pull 3 to 4 ploughs. It used a completely new engine and transmission. It was a reliable, low cost machine to operate and was versatile with applications ranging from farming, small landscaping contracts to surface coal mining. It had a Cat D3400, four cylinder, 3 3/4 x 5 inch bore and stroke diesel engine.
The model D2, 3J and 5J series were manufactured from 1938 to 1947 and the 4U and 5U series from 1948 to 1957. The 3J had a standard 40inch wide track gauge and the 5J had a 50inch wide track gauge. The original price was US$1,400. The total number of D2s produced was 26,454
