History and use
Object history
This model 5-Ton crawler tractor T-29 series was manufactured in 1925. The 5-Ton was originally built for use by the military in World War 1. The Caterpillar 5 Ton was in the initial product line of the newly founded Caterpillar Tractor Company after the C. L. Best Tractor Company and the Holt Manufacturing Company merged. It started production in 1924 under the HOLT company but was carried over to the Caterpillar product line in 1925. It has a cast steel frame instead of the rivetted frame of earlier versions

The 5-Ton was originally built for use by the military in World War 1.
It was imported from the USA by Bert Thiess. The tractor has snow tracks attached as it was used in snowy Conneticut winters.. It was also painted red, but was restored and repainted by Bert and his son Neil. The crawler is now painted grey with red trim, the official Caterpillar colours prior to 1932 and has a 'wavy' caterpillar logo, the original logo adopted by the Caterpillar company.

This tractor model is considered rare and it is believed that there only 5-6 machines in Australia and it is a very popular model with enthusiasts. It is reported that Bert took this tractor to Allora in Queensland for Australia Day celebrations on many occasions.
