History and use
This tractor is a model Twenty PL series manufactured in 1930. The model Twenty was the first tractor designed by the Caterpillar Tractor company that was not derived or rebadged from a previous HOLT or BEST model. It started manufacture in 1927 at the San Leandro plant. From 1928 it was also manufactured at the Peoria plant. It was powered by a four cylinder Cat 4x5 1/2 inch bore and stroke, gasoline engine.
It is believed it is the Twenty that his family had owned in the 1930s. It is the first tractor that Bert drove at the age of 15 or16. He drove it while working on contracts for his family, prior to Thiess Bros being established.
The model Twenty was to establish the the design look for many future Caterpillar tractors. Production finshed at San Leandro in 1927 with 1970 tractors manufactured and Peoria until 1931 with 6331 manufactured.
