History and use
This tractor is a 3J series manufactured in 1939. It is a special purpose machine designated by the SP suffix on the serial number.Special Purpose indicates that the gear ratios are more closely spaced for agricultural use as opposed to wider spacing for industrial use. The D2 model was a diesel crawler tractor first manufactured in 1938. It was Caterpillar’s smallest diesel tractor. It had a Cat D3400, four cylinder, 3 3/4 x 5 inch bore and stroke diesel engine.
In 1947 the D2, 3J and 5J series, was upgraded to the 4U and 5U series. They were the same overall design but had a more powerful engine and significantly redesigned radiator housing, plus the addition of a dip-stick for the oil level in the gear box.
The model D2, 3J and 5J series were manufactured from 1938 to 1947. The 4U and 5U series were produced from 1947 to 1957. The 3J and 4U had a standard 40inch wide track gauge and the 5J and 5U had a 50inch wide track gauge. The original price was US$1,400. The total number of D2s produced was 26,454
