History and use
The Marian Lester collection comprises a number of objects relating to the donor’s participation as a volunteer at the XXI Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018. Officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games, the event commonly known as Gold Coast 2018 (GC 2018), was an international multi-sport event for members of Commonwealth nations that were held between 4 and 15 April 2018. As the fifth Commonwealth games hosted by Australia, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games was the first sporting event in Commonwealth Games history to include an integrated Para-Sport program, Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and gender equity with an equal number of medal events for men and women.

Like the 1982 Brisbane XII Commonwealth Games and World Expo ‘88, the enthusiasm and work of volunteers underpinned the running of the Gold Coast 2018 Games with over forty-seven thousand applicants for the fifteen thousand volunteer positions required. As part of the Games workforce known as ‘Games Shapers’ (which included volunteers, staff and contractors), volunteers attended multiple training sessions to equip them with the skills and knowledge to successfully perform their roles at the Games. The training was also intended to help volunteers to continue serving their communities after the completion of the event.

The vibrant fluoro blue and yellow ‘Games Shapers’ uniforms were designed by iconic Australian workwear manufacturer, Hard Yakka, and showcased at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on 11 November 2017. The Games Shapers’ uniform design brief called for ‘bold, bright and relaxed’ clothing styles reflecting the Gold Coast's distinctively confident and colourful character, combined with a number of practical features adapted to the Queensland heat. As well as being lightweight and ‘breathable’, all fabrics were rated Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 50+.
