AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS \ COMMISSIONERS TENNIS SHIELD
REPLICA DONATED BY THE COMMISSIONERS \ TO "QUEENSLAND" \ WINNER OF THE 1958 CARNIVAL
History and use
This shield was presented to members of the Queensland Railway Institute 1958 tennis team for winning a carnival between railway institutes.

Members of Australian railway institutes participated in local sporting competitions and representative sides were chosen to compete against other interstate railway institutions. Sports included football, rifle shooting, tennis, table tennis and cricket. New South Wales and Queensland Railway Institutes played against each other in Rugby League tests, while the majority of other states played Australian Rules Football tests. Cricket was the biggest of the sports, with all states participating, including the Commonwealth Railway, in cricket competitions.

A side to represent the Queensland Railway Institute at the March 1958 Australian Railways Institutes' Tennis Carnival in Perth was chosen in late 1957. The team comprised of: B.W Anderson (Cairns), R. Snell (Emerald), J.H Bell (Rosedale), A. Bretz (Bundaberg), D. Lewis (Bundaberg), F. Burns (Ipswich), L. Hasted (Ipswich) and G.D Kerr (Brisbane). Mr J.T Philbean the QRI's Social and Sports Secretary was appointed the team's touring Manager.
