History and use
This shield was presented to members of the Queensland Railway Institute 1983 squash team for winning a carnival between railway institutes.
Members of Australian railway institutes participated in local sporting competitions and representative sides were chosen to compete against other interstate railway institutions. Sports included football, rifle shooting, tennis, table tennis and cricket. New South Wales and Queensland Railway Institutes played against each other in Rugby League tests, while the majority of other states played Australian Rules Football tests. Cricket was the biggest of the sports, with all states participating, including the Commonwealth Railway, in cricket competitions.
A side to represent the Queensland Railway Institute at the July 1983 Australian and New Zealand Railways Institutes' Squash Carnival in Melbourne was chosen in April 1983. The team comprised of: C.D Miller (Clerk, Railway Centre; Captain), W.D Nilon (Clerk, Ipswich), A.J Monk (Acting Night Officer, Brisbane Relief), K. Schramm (Clerk, Rockhampton) and G.L Reinhardt (Clerk, Redbank).
