History and use
Members of Australian railway institutes participated in local sporting competitions and representative sides were chosen to compete against other interstate railway institutions. Sports included football, rifle shooting, tennis, table tennis and cricket. New South Wales and Queensland Railway Institutes played against each other in Rugby League tests, while the majority of other states played Australian Rules Football tests. Cricket was the biggest of the sports, with all states participating, including the Commonwealth Railway, in cricket competitions. Teams from New Zealand also participated regularly in the national competitions.

The first soccer representative matches between Queensland and New South Wales Railway Institutes were played in 1938 when NSW toured Brisbane. Matches were played between the late 1930s to the 1980s at various times. During the 1980s, annual matches were played and in 1984, this shield was given to the winning side for that year. It is clear from the design of the shield, that it was intended to be used yearly and given back between the two state sides, but after winning it once, it appears Queensland did not return the shield to be used again.

Soccer matches between the two railway institute sides continued after 1984, even though this shield was only used once.
