Polished black lip pearl oyster shell

History and use
This shell is part of a collection of black lip pearl oyster shells (Pinctada margaritifera) that demonstrate the creative process from raw material to contemporary Tahitian artwork.
Both sides of the shell have been polished, and it would either be sold as is, or engraved with local motifs and designs.

This collection of objects was curated as part of Jasmin Guenther’s PhD thesis (James Cook University) and exhibited in Making Connections: French Polynesia and the HMS Pandora Collection at the Museum of Tropical Queensland (2019).
