History and use
Designed and made by Cairns textile artist and fashion designer, Simone Arnol, in collaboration with Djunngaal Elders – Yarrabah, this simple, modest, buttoned-to-the-neck white dress is based on the style of wedding dress which Yarrabah women wore in ‘mission times’ and was made using repurposed white polyester and cotton fabric donated by Granny Hope Patterson.

The train extending from beneath the dress features printed graphic images representing the suppression of culture, tradition and history that lay hidden beneath the outer veneer of strict missionary control. The edges of the train have been sealed by fire.

A wrist shackle made from rusted metal and chain symbolises the forced control of Aboriginal peoples at Yarrabah mission against their will.
