History and use
C17 class locomotives were one of the most enduring and successful designs used by Queensland Railways. The design was an upgrade from the C16 class locomotives. C17s were built from 1920 right up until to 1953, with numerous improvements and modifications adopted during the years in between. C17 No.861 was built in batch now known as the ‘the 1938 version’.

After the Great Depression, Queensland Government Railways decided to upgrade the C17 design and build six in-house at the Ipswich Railway Workshops. No.861 was the fourth of this batch and given the build number 161 for 1938 and entered service in March 1939.

No.861 operated extensively throughout the Northern Division and was based at times in Townsville (1949, 1954, 1958), Charters Towers (1954) and Cloncurry (1955). The locomotive was written off at the end of 1964.
