History and use
To meet the demands of rapidly increasing passenger numbers on the Brisbane suburban network, Queensland Railways decided to add more tank engines to their fleet. The railways had been using a tank locomotive, the 6D16, since 1900 but these engines were running to their limits pulling the passenger trains throughout Brisbane. It was decided that a larger design should be built. The new engines were known as 6D17s, they had a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement, C17 style cylinders and a superheated boiler a little larger than the 6D16.

The first ten 6D17s were built by Walkers Limited of Maryborough and were all delivered in 1924. A further 20 were built at the Ipswich Railway Workshops between 1925 and 1942. In 1936 QGR reclassified the engines as D17s, eliminate the ‘6’ from the name.

The class worked on the Brisbane network mainly on passenger services (although they occasionally hauled off-peak goods and livestock trains around Brisbane). With the increasing dieselisation of the fleet, diesels began to replace these tanks engines during the 1960s.

No.85 was the second 6D17 built at the Ipswich Railway Workshops (works number 105) in 1925 and entered service in May of the same year. It was written off in April 1963.
