History and use
Athol Hedges was named after its founder and began operating in Northgate in the late 1940s. The firm were well known for building buses, building the Brisbane City Council bus fleet to replace the tram network that was closed in 1969. During the 1950s, Athol Hedges became an affiliated company with Commonwealth Engineering. Athol Hedges built QRC standard freight containers for Queensland Railways and it is likely this plate is from one of those containers.
The company was purchased by the Australian Manufacturing Group in 1982 and renamed Austral.
