History and use
The Queensland Railway Department was known by a number of names between 1865 and 1991. Queensland Goverment Railways, Queensland Railways and the Queensland Railway Department were at times interchangeably used throughout the Department's history. The Queensland Railway Department offically ceased to exist in 1991 with the enacting of the Transport Infrastructure (Railways) Act 1991 which replaced the Railways Act 1914.

The new act allowed for the restructing of Queensland Railways into a government owned corporation, renamed Queensland Rail. Queensland Rail no longer had a Commissioner reporting to the Minister for Transport. The new corporation was headed by a Chief Executive Officer reporting to a board of directors.
