History and use
This badge was collected by a member of the Queensland Railway Institute (QRI). Members of QRI participated in local sporting competitions and representative sides were chosen to compete against other interstate railway institutions. Sports included football, rifle shooting, tennis, table tennis and cricket. New South Wales and Queensland Railway Institutes played against each other in Rugby League tests, while the majority of other states played Australian Rules Football tests. Cricket was the biggest of the sports, with all states participating in cricket competitions.
The man who collected this badge was Gilbert Henry Johnstone, a locomotive driver, and later an inspector based at the Mayne Locomotive Depot in Brisbane. Mr Johnstone was involved in a number of sporting teams at the Mayne Locomotive Depot and the Queensland Railway Institute. Teams included the Mayne Locomotive Cricket Club and Queensland Railway Institute cricket and rugby league sides.
Johnson also collected pins and badges from railway institues from other states. Mr Johnstone's son, Leroy, believed that his father had traded pins and badges at interstate railway sporting carnivals.
