History and use
This small nineteenth century glass stopper was likely used in a pharmaceutical or patent medicine glass bottle. Glass stoppers were also commonly used with glass perfume bottles as well as alcohol decanters, however, stoppers for these more expensive products were often more decorative. Stoppers often came with a cork or rubber sheath to help hold the stopper in place and contain the bottle contents, however, this stopper has no lip or edge to hold the sheath in place.
