History and use
37 pipe bowl fragments were recovered from the Tower Mill assemblage but only two have any designs. One is this small fragment of tobacco pipe bowl (>2cm2), depicting a fully rigged three-masted sailing ship. A very similar pipe bowl fragment was recovered from archaeological excavations at the Port Arthur penal settlement (Tasmania) and was attributed to Thomas White and Company which was the primary Edinburgh pipe-making company exporting to Australasia.
