History and use
Two coins were recovered during the excavations – one is a 1916 sixpence and the other is this 1950 penny, both minted in Melbourne. The 1950 penny is a bronze coin, featuring the bare head of George VI facing left on one side and a bounding kangaroo on the reverse. The George VI penny was minted between 1938 and 1952 and over 50 million were produced. Australia stopped minting pre-decimal coins in 1964. In 1966, the decimal coins we use today were introduced.
